If you knew how we were going to end
would you still have done it?
Everything comes to an end. That’s pretty much the only thing we are promised coming into this world. We get through the bad counting on the impermanence that comes with life. But what about the good? That ends too. Friendships fade and love falters.
Right?
I’m sure there are a million things you could look back at and resent their ending. But would you ever choose for those moments to not have happened to avoid that closing sentence? Would you choose to not have met somebody to avoid the loneliness afterward? Would you choose not to love to avoid heartbreak? It’s simple, I guess. If you don’t put yourself in these situations, you can’t feel their repercussions. If you don’t let him/her in, then they won’t have the chance to tear you apart with their absence.
Looking back, in my experience, the good as always always always outweighed the bad. I’ve come into some of the most amazing friendships knowing we’d be separated by states in a matter of a few months. I’ve agreed to falling in love knowing it was on a clock. I’ve gone against my better judgement and given things a chance knowing they were doomed.
But that’s the problem. Sometimes our heart betrays our better judgement. And at the end of the day, what more could you have asked for, than to have done everything your heart desired.

I would not trade a shared smile with that special person, or a hug from friends who are no longer streets away, for the absence I feel now that they’re gone. And trust me that absence is big, sometimes you even feel it for longer than you experienced that person. But if you’re even a little bit like me, you won’t resent the ending. You’ll be grateful that you got to care for someone so much that you’re permanently marked by the absence.
Is this stupid? Maybe. I might’ve convinced this is the right way to go because I’ve realized it’s the way I work.
Now, forget about people. Think back to your most amazing travels. You got on that plane knowing you’d come home in a matter of time. Did that stop you from going? Never. Do you wish you could go back every day? Probably. But the fear of missing a place or a person cannot be the thing to stop you. We are guaranteed an ending, so lead with your heart and feel everything that you can as much as you can, that way you’ll have a beautiful life to look back at.
